Warning: Secondhand Eating Kills

This is an advertisement I found on the Graphis website. It's a 2009 winner for Advertising for Public Services created for the Dietitians of Canada. I love when designs have double meanings, so this ad definitely caught my eye. It's actually donuts lined up to look like a cigarette; brilliant. I also like the touch of the nutrition facts at the bottom. This ad shows that simplicity can be super effective and creative. Next time you go to Yum Yum think of the surgeon general.

  1. I love when advertisements have double meanings it kind of relates to the Quaker Oats ad I posted with the jet-pack. I think this ad really demonstrates the health issues involved with obesity. It kind of takes it to another level by relating it to the cancerous effects of smoking. I feel the way advertisements really work with me is when it is simple yet has deeper meanings within it. Ads never work for me when its just simple words telling you to buy this product or you need to drink this. I think design in advertising is very important to the achievements of a brand or a companies identity.

  2. This is definitely an eye catching advertisement. I didn't notice it was donuts until you mentioned it but it is a clever way to integrate the health issues of obesity and smoking. Not only are too many donuts not healthy for you but also smoking. So, it makes you think twice all in one photo.

  3. I think double meaning advertisement really grab my attention because I usually don't get the hidden meaning at my first glance. When I start to get it, I will amazed by how great the idea is. When I first look at this picture, I though it is a propaganda of warning against smoking. Then I find out it is promoting the idea of diet.

  4. The ad is interesting and provokes a serious message. I find double meaning advertisements can be ones that are most memorable. You have to double take on the image at times but once you see what the message from the image is projecting, it makes you think. I like advertisements that make you think and question things.

  6. Great ad. Who ever designed it has an amazing creative mind. It's not effective because it makes me want to go grab a donut.
